A broad national coalition without institutional capture

Five equal pillars.
One shared civic purpose.

UniteSA brings different sources of reach, knowledge, trust and lived experience into a common participation layer while ensuring that no single sector controls the platform or its evidence.

A society-wide civic layer

Each pillar contributes something essential.
None owns the whole.

The pillar structure is designed to widen participation, improve the quality of questions and reduce dependence on any one political, financial, religious or institutional centre.

Business

Brings economic, enterprise, investment, employment, infrastructure and implementation experience—from organised business and major employers to SMEs and the informal economy.

Faith & Religious Communities

Bring trusted local reach, moral reflection, community care and the ability to invite participation across diverse congregations without diminishing difference.

Civil Society

Brings public-interest advocacy, service experience, community capability and close knowledge of people whose voices are too often absent.

Sport, Arts & Culture

Bring belonging, youth connection, identity, creativity and participation through the networks and stories that help society recognise itself.

The Business Pillar

From economic intent to visible implementation.

Business needs a capable state, stable communities, credible public institutions and trustworthy ground-level evidence. Citizens need growth, work, delivery and institutions prepared to listen.

UniteSA can help business organisations, companies, chambers and sector bodies understand public priorities, test whether complex policy choices are understood, monitor implementation and learn what communities and smaller enterprises experience beyond formal consultation rooms.

The relationship is collaborative, not controlling. Business can help frame useful questions, contribute expertise, support rigorous studies and act on the findings. It cannot privately own participant data, determine the answer or make UniteSA a corporate lobbying channel.

The Faith & Religious Communities Pillar

Unite without diminishing difference.

Faith communities are among South Africa’s most extensive and trusted human networks. They can help people encounter civic participation through relationships and places they already know.

UniteSA invites Christian churches and councils, other faith traditions and interfaith bodies to help communities understand public issues, participate responsibly and connect local experience to national evidence. The platform does not ask any tradition to surrender its beliefs, and it does not turn civic participation into a theological project.

Congregations and faith networks may support access and mobilisation, but they do not see how an individual responded, do not own participant records and cannot use the platform to test religious loyalty. Participation remains voluntary and protected.

Ways institutions can participate

Bring a real contribution and respect the public-interest boundaries.

Reach

Invite participation

Help appropriate communities and cohorts discover, understand and take part in a well-governed project.

Knowledge

Contribute expertise

Explain the issue, identify trade-offs, test assumptions and help make complex information publicly understandable.

Governance

Strengthen assurance

Contribute constitutional, legal, research, privacy, audit, ethics, accessibility and methodology capability.

Application

Co-design a pilot

Bring a consequential question, affected participants, a legitimate route to action and willingness to publish honestly.

Capacity

Support the foundation

Provide patient funding, technology, people or services without purchasing control of public voice or evidence.

Response

Act on the signal

Explain what will change, what cannot change and how the public can see progress over time.

International partners and funders

Support a South African proof with wider democratic value.

Democracies around the world struggle to hear citizens continuously, distinguish informed participation from manipulation and close the loop between public input and institutional action.

South Africa offers a demanding and meaningful environment in which to develop this capability. International partners may contribute patient capital, research, technical assurance, civic-learning exchange, governance expertise or global convening power.

The work remains South African in purpose and accountable to South African constitutional principles. External support cannot purchase control, extract participant data or convert the country into an experimental market.
